List of my favourite things to do

Here is a list from 1 to 4 of my favourite things to do.

Number 1, watching TV. This is my favourite things to do. It helps me relaxes and also keeps me updated on what is going on around the world. The only time I don’t watch TV is when the commercials are on, I hate the commercials.

Number 2, listening to music. This is also really soothing and calming. I listen to music while on my way home and school. I listen to music to help me sleep and if it is too loud during class I would put earphone in my ears and begin listening to music.

Number 3, playing handball with my friends, Iisa, Rave, Isaaka, Helen and Nikita (these are links to their blogs). When I say handball I don’t me the olympic handball. Every morning tea and lunch time we go on a quest to hunt for a ball so that we can play handball. We all enjoy playing handball.

So in conclusion these are the 3 things I like doing most. After reading this blogpost you might realize, you have some things in common with me.

Why is family important?

Everyone has a family. Some have biological families and some don’t. Does it really matter? Family is not only the people who share the same blood as you, they can also be the people who love and support you through out life. I have chosen to write about the importance of families.

Families are always supportive and will be with you every step of the way. They teach you what's right and wrong and help you understand life better. Their help is precise so are they. They push you to do things you never thought you could do. e.g run a long distance race without stopping or even improve your education.

You should always treasure your family because sadly a vast amount of children do not have families to come home to. They were either abandoned as a child or their parents died. These children are called orphans.

Imagine coming home one day and realizing your family is gone. Would you be in shock? How would you feel? What would you do? Your mom wouldn’t be there to make dinner for you. No one would be there to put you to bed at night.

At night I always tell my mom “I love you” before I go to bed because what if she, wasn’t breathing in the morning. At least I would remember that my last words to her where “I love you”. We should all love our families because we don’t know when they would be gone.

A good family would love and support you no matter what. A bad family would put you down all the time and say negative, unnecessary comments to you. A good family is like God they will pick you up when you feel down. A bad family is like a bully and will always be mean to you just for their entertainment.

In conclusion families are extremely important, they help you out when you most need it. You should love them, I mean they did give birth to you and remember not all families are perfect.

Te Tuhi

Te Tuhi is an art gallery. It is located in Pakaranga. There are also art classes for people who are willing to learn about art. I think it is a great place. Our class visited Te Tuhi as a trip. We all enjoyed created our own tapa. After creating our tapa we headed to the gallery. In the gallery there are only 4 things.

Step 1 get an ordinary A4 paper and scrunch it up. Step 2 use a brown crayon to scrap the paper. Step 3 cover the paper with dye and let it dry. Step 4 use pencil to draw patterns on it. Step 5 use brown crayon to color in the background of 2 of your designs. Step 6 use brown paint to paint the background of your other designs design. You are now done.

Thank you letter

Dear Mr Filimoehala

Thank you for helping supervise us on our trip to the Auckland Museum. Your help is truly appreciated. Without your help our trip would of been canceled. We took some interesting artistic photos and created fun memories.

You lead and helped us understand the art of cultural styles. Your commitment and helping was something truly amazing and precious to us. You kept us from going astray and stayed as an example to us.

Dark Chocolate

The thing I am addicted to in this whole integer universe is, dark chocolate! I love it. When I go Pak’n Save I always beg my mum for a bar of dark chocolate. If I were ever stunk on an island all I would want is a bar of dark chocolate, oh and my family of course.

I often dream about being in a land all made of dark chocolate. When I ever have this dream I always try make it last forever. I love have this dream I call it the Dark Island. In this dream the chocolate never melts and will never is past its expiry date.

For some reason whenever I try to eat the dark chocolate I always wake up. I never get sick of dark chocolate. I probably get one whole bar of dark chocolate a week.

Athletics

It was athletics day and I was excited. Athletics is the day when people participate in a mixture of events. Each pupil is put into their year group and they will be staying in that year group for the whole day. Pt England recently held our athletics day on the 14th of november 2014.

The first events we did was sack races and tug a rope. Each year 7 was put into smaller groups of 6 to 7. In these groups we raced each other in our sacks and to figure out what team is the fastest. After having fun with the sacks we began a tug a war comp. This was done in the same teams.

We then moved to softball throws it was fun. I am really bad at throwing softball but I still gave it a go. I failed but I didn’t really are

The next event was relays. We had to run a short distance and deliver the pool noodle to the next person. Then we did skipping races. I don’t know the point of this event but I still had fun. It was similar to the relays

The obstacle course was cool because we raced each other trying to find out who is the fastest team. After this we had lunch to help boost our energy. Once we finished lunch we did shot put. Shot put was wonderful because there were supportive people who encouraged me.

Our last event for the day was high jump. I enjoyed this because I love landing on the high jump mat. Taniela came first, Brandon came second and Vaifoa came third.

Auckland Museum

The Auckland Museum is where valuable objects are held for the public to admire. It is a good place for a school trip because it will teach pupils about the history of objects. Recently the year 7 students visited the Auckland Museum and looked at the art gallery.  Some of the item you will find there might be modern or outdated. Each object has their own text explaining what the object is, what it was used for and what it was made of.

In the Auckland Museum I managed to locate the Tonga coat of arms. It was in the Pacific gallery. There was also tapa and tradition customs. It is important to learning about your coulcher and ancestors. In the Tonga coat of arms the shield has been divided into quarters.  The top left quarter shows three stars representing the three main islands, Tongatapu, Ha'apai, and Vava'u. The top right quarter shows a crown representing the kingdom.

The bottom left quarter shows a dove bird with an olive branch in its beak which represents the lord, peace and our belief in god (the dove is from the story Noah and the great flood). The bottom left shows three swords representing the three monarchs to the throne. The six star in the middle of the sheil with the cross inside represents the nation. Finally the writing at the bottom reads Tonga and God is my Inheritance.

In the Māori gallery you will find detailed carvings, woven bags and mats. There are even wakas. Out in the domain there are large scorchers that you can play on there is even a small water fall.

In conclusion the Auckland Museum is where things of great value are held. It is a historic place.

Why is cars important?

Cars are vehicles used to travel or to get from one place to another. Without them how would people get to work. Cars are really important. There are positives to using cars and negatives.

Here are the negatives to using a car.
Well first of all in some places fuel or petrol cost a lot of money which can be frustrating. Cars pollute the air and I know that people who drive cars don’t intend to pollute the air but it just happens. Air is what we breathe so that effects us as well. To top it off cars can be dangerous for pedestrians as well. They get injured because sometimes when they are crossing the road a car comes and hits them:(

The only way to end this madness is if we ban cars and force people to purchase cars that run on electricity but some people won’t be able to afford a whole new car creating stress. Here are the positives to using cars. They get us for place to place, it might be from home to work or from home to the supermarket they are really helpful.

Image you were ready to drive to work but as you open your front door your car is missing. Suddenly you realize that every single in the world is gone. What would you be thinking? What would you do? Would you be happy?

In conclusion cars have and good and bad side to them. It is good to try use your car as less as possible and try walk to places.

Why are trees important?

Trees are one of the most important resources in the world and they are also home to many animals. Without them our world as we know it would never be the same. They are necessary for our survival because it produces gas that we breathe. There is a significant reason to why we need trees.

Trees create the oxygen that we need or we would be dead. It produces shade we sit under. It gives us the fruit that we eat. They are needed for so many products and is very valuable. It gives us the wood we need to build homes etc.

Imagine you woke up one morning and looked out your bedroom window. As your eyes scanned your backyard you notice that every single tree in the world was chopped down that night. How would you feel about this huge change? What would you be thinking about?

Cutting trees down is good at times because it creates more space for land and wood. If you cut trees down you might as well plant more so that the regeneration of trees can continue. You can chop down trees but only if it is necessary.

In conclusion trees are extremely valuable. Most people see trees as sticks and leaves but they are way more. They are special.

Tattoo

This is the tattoo that I created. The cross represents my belief in God and in the church. The waves represents the fact that I love the beach. The eyes represents honesty because I believe that looking into someone eyes will attract the truth. The peace sign represents the fact that I want world peace.

Why do we need to sleep?

Sleep gives your body the time it needs to heal. It is also the time your body grows and develop mentally and physically. It plays a big role in your health and wellbeing. The main things you would notice about someone who is not sleeping is that they would have mood swings, they would get distracted easily, they would have red eyes, they would be tied and depression will begin.

While you are sleeping your brain is preparing for the next day and the tasks ahead. It is creating new pathways that helps you maintain a healthy brain. A healthy functioning brain will remember information, it will improve your memory and will help you keep focused.

Sleep will help your creativity and the way you think. Sleeping is the time your body rest and takes a break. It is important because without sleep your body will be messed up. Your body gets taller as you sleep. Most kids hate bed time but because they are still in their youth they need the sleep or you won’t grow.

So I hope you have realized why we need sleep. It is extremely important.

Why is it important to have class rules?

The key to control is rules and discipline. A class without rules and discipline is normally full of chaos, disrespect and violence. This is bad because class is a place where students learning, not a place where students fight and go crazy. So rules are extremely important. Most people hate rules but rules are made for a reason.

Imagine if you walked into your class as a student and the teacher announced that there are no more rules. Suddenly everyone began going crazy and fighting began. What would you do? Would you join them? Do you want there to be no rules in class?

Here are a few things that can happen if there were no rules in class and if you do want there to be no rules in class this might change your mind. Some students would start robbing the things around them, like computers, laptops and other peoples personal items etc. Which would lead to thefts in the future and they would probably go to jail. Some student might bring weapons to school that can kill other students.

It would be impossible to learn because people will be too distracting. Bullying would in increase making kids abandon class. No one would feel safe and protected. Students would swear at teachers, making the teacher quite. People would disrespect each other and their privacy. Parents would start taking their children out of school and eventually there would be no more students in class.

I hope you have realized the importance of rules and why they are made.

Immersion Assembly

At the start of every term Pt England School holds an immersion assembly introducing the topic for the term. During the immersion assembly every team performs an item announcing to the school what their team is focusing on for the term. The whole school is learning about Art Attack but every team is learning about different things around Art Attack.

Team 1 has been inspired by the beauty of the environment, so they will be visiting the creek to have a picnic. In their item Mr Jacobsen (vice principal) painted a landscape picture of the beach. As he was painting, the teachers throw chocolate fish out to random students.

Team 2 are focusing on the primary colours Red, Yellow and Blue. They viewed a video with people mixing primary colour. Mixing Red and Yellow makes Orange. Mixing Blue and Red makes Purple. Mixing Yellow and Blue makes Green.

Team 3 are looking at the backgrounds of different artist, what painting they are most famous for and how they paint. e.g Leonardo Da Vinci was famous for his painting, the Mona Lisa.

Team 4 are learning about famous paintings and famous artist. In their item they held an art contest where the audience voted which painting they liked the most. There were paintings from back in the day as well as current paintings.

Team 5 painted 3 portraits. The first portrait was of Mr Jacobsen (vice principal) painted by Mrs Lagitupu and Mrs Paget. The second portrait was of Mrs Jarman (vice principal) painted by Mr Barks and Mrs Nua. The third portrait was of Mr Burt (principal) painted by Mrs Squires and Miss Clark.

They only used black and white paint and they painted it upside down. While they painted a 4 min long movie played. Once they finish they flipped it making it rightside up. Everyone glanced at the 3 portraits shocked. It looked amazing.

I find art fun and I’m looking forward to this term.

John Key

John Key is the leader of the National party. He is also the Prime Minister of our country, New Zealand. Every third year New Zealand holds a vote where New Zealanders vote to change the government or to stick with the same one. At the end of the vote there is an election held where all the votes are added up, deciding if we have a new Prime Minister or not.

Recently New Zealand citizens have voted. It has been crazy! The two top parties that received the most votes were Labour and National, but in the end National won. I think it is good that kiwi’s gets to vote for our government. I wanted Labour to win.

Labour:
The leader of Labour is David Cunliffe. Aged 51 and he was born on the 30th of April 1963. Labour began in 1916. The Deputy leader is David Parker.

National:

The leader of National is John Key. Aged 53 and he was born on the 9th of August 1961. Labour began in 1936. The Deputy leader is Bill English.

Cross Country

As I prepared for a 3 km run, I stretched my muscles to help improve my flexibility. Cross country had arrived and I was feeling better than ever. Normal kids usually have butterflies invading their stomachs before taking part in a lengthy race, but I wasn’t one of them. I wasn’t nervous at all. The only explanation for this I thought, was that people didn’t have high expectations about me coming first, second, or third. All they expected from me was to put in the effort.

In my opinion, our course (Year 7s) was extremely long. We needed to run around the school field twice as well as the whole of the Pt England reserve twice. If you check it out on Google maps you will see that it’s huge!

I was ready to run so I began wishing my neighbours good luck. Mr Burt (Principal of Pt England School) shouted “On your marks... Get set....”. He picked up the wooden clapper. “Bang!” Off the year 7 boys and I went, jogging like soldiers at war. Believe it or not, I was exhausted already. At first I assumed I was going to come last because most of the boys were sprinting, but I realized that I had a strategy. In long distance I would always jog first, and consume as much energy as I could for my ‘BIG’ sprint at the end. Because of this strategy I was able to pass most of the boys due to their low energy that had used up in the beginning of the race.

“GO JORDAN!” Miss Lavakula cheered. Hearing positive feedback from others created a big smile that swallowed up my face. It also gave me the strength to endure to the end. I was trying to concentrate on the race but I couldn't as I was distracted by the fact that I was ahead of everyone.

As I was near the finish line I began sprinting to try and pass some people in front. As I was doing this I noticed that I was passing most people who were ahead of me. I heard students, parents and teachers cheering and clapping for us. This really helped motivate and push me to keep going. It also brought so much joy and delight to me, as I observed the amount of encouragement there was on that marvellous day.

Leaping over the finish line, I heard a teacher say “Jordan you came third.” I was breathing heavily and felt like I was about to have a heart attack. With a look of confusion on my face I asked “What? Did I come third? Me? Are you sure?” “Yes, now move along” the teacher replied annoyed by my questions.

The feeling of happiness filled me up with energy and I didn’t feel tired at all. I honestly, felt like dancing hardcore, but I didn’t want to embarrass myself, so I just did what everyone else was doing and walked over to the water station. I believe I tryed my best run, I didn’t expected to come third I really thought that I was going to come 10th. I was obviously wrong. In the end of the day I was proud of myself. I’d like to think all the teachers that helped make this event happen.

Especially Mrs V, I don’t think she realizes that any sports events would never be the fun without her. The lorde also helped by clearing the clouds and bringing a sun.

Plastics may pose a greater threat than climate change

This is a letter to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr John Key.

Dear Prime Minister, (Mr John Key)
I have an issue to bring to your attention. This letter is all about plastic being a problem, and how it may pose a greater threat than climate change in New Zealand. People around NZ don’t know the effects that plastic has on this Earth and the sea, but I do. Hopefully this letter will put the thought in your head that plastic may pose a greater threat than climate change.

A huge amount of the ocean is full of rubbish. Plastic is commonly mistaken as food for sea creatures and other animals. Once they eat it they get very ill and eventually die. This reduces the amount of animals on wonderful planet and it’s sad to hear it. We all love animals, but we never notice that the reason why they die most of the time is because of us.

Plastic bags are very inexpensive in New Zealand, which is one of the reasons why people buy it. At Pak’n’save they are just 10 cents per bag. If you compare it to Scotland, you will realise that they have banned plastic bags, due to the amount of pollution. I personally think we should also ban plastic bags as well, so stores will be forced to sell recyclable bags or paper bags.

Aotearoa or ‘the land of the long white cloud’ is known for its clean green surroundings. We are known for our sweet honey and also our woolly sheep. So in order to keep this amazing reputation going we need to ban plastic bags.

Did you know it takes 1000 years to break down a polyethylene bag? Because of this there has been an alarming rubbish rate in the pacific. In the North Pacific Ocean rubbish is turning into a gyre twice the size of Texas. The North Pacific Ocean is just above New Zealand!

So Prime Minister, please keep our country clean and green. When people come to our county, they expect to see beautiful nature and animals. If you don’t take action now the pollution rate will rise and become higher. With my proposal, we can make NZ a better place.

Yours sincerely
Jordan

Should children exercise every day?

Exercise. Some kids really hate the thought of it and always try to avoid it. I agree that children should exercise every day as exercise is really important. It is proven to help you live longer. I will be explaining why daily exercise is important.

Parents normally think it is okay if their children are overweight, but it’s not really the case. From research I know that obesity can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing problems and sleeping problems. I know that parents would never want their children to get any of these health issues. Kids who are unfit have a greater chance of getting sick.

I believe a good way to exercise is to join a sports team or play outdoor games daily. For example, playing rugby, netball, basketball etc, all these sports are great ways to keep fit. To keep fit, you also need to eat the right foods. Remember to eat your fruits, vegetables and vitamins. Eating the right foods is really important as it helps improve energy levels. There are three elements to fitness: endurance, strength and flexibility.

I am aware that going on daily walks, runs, riding a bike, skipping or even running up and down the stairs a few times, are a good way to exercise. It’s those little things that help. Exercising can help improve your flexibility and stamina. It can also help strengthen your bones or muscles and it gives you a better outlook on life. Exercise to kids, is playing outside games or being physically active.

I sympathize with those people who find it hard to exercise, but they just need to try hard and push themselves. Once you believe you will achieve. The people on the “Biggest Loser” were huge but they never gave up and look at them now. I’m just saying that it is never too late to start exercising.

There is a great difference between a fit and an unfit person. For example an unfit person will be lazy. He or she will keeps zoning out during class. They will never be able to focus or concentrate and will have problems sleeping which will lead to grumpiness and no one likes a grumpy person. A fit person will usually be more focused and will be able to concentrate better. He or she will be energetic and happy most of the time.

So I hope you have realized that I have proved my point. Children should exercise every day. There are serious consequences if they don’t. Everyone wants to be happy and exercising will help you to be happy.

Why your mind and body is importent

Did you know that your body and mind is a temple of god, so you should take good care of it. If you are still in your youth your mind and body has not fully developed yet. So if you don’t take good care of it now, you're mine and body will never become fully grown and that is really important.

Your body is a gift from God, taking care of your body mean watching out for what you put in you body, making sure you eat and drink the right things and keeping your body clean. Taking drugs or alcohol creates a big impact on not only you but other people, it also affects you physically and mentally. Alcohol and drugs can actually kill you.

Your mind can do all sorts of things you never imagined. Your mind controls your whole body, from top to bottom. It holds all your knowledge and memories. Your mind plays a big role in the nerve system, so taking bad things slow down your nerve system, making you not aware of danger which means you are not alert and focused.

Taking drugs will also close a lot of doors in life. For example if you wanted to become a doctor you can’t because you will never be able to focus or concentrate on the work. Keeping you mind pure and clean is important.

So I hope you learnt a lot from this and also spread the word about your mind and body. Try hard to reach your full potential. Remember to alway keep your body and mind clean because once you began using drugs you can never go back.

Life Education

Drugs, it can make your life fall into disrepair. Especially if you start using it while you're still young. It can ruin your life. People normally begin using drugs because they think it is cool, they might use it as an escape, maybe to fit in or  just because everyone else is doing it.

Recently our class has been visiting Harold in the Life Education Caravan, where Lynne has been teaching us about illegal and legal things like drugs and alcohol. I think visiting her has been very helpful and it has helped me, to know what to do when I am offered drugs or alcohol.

Lynne also showed us a DVD about what drugs can do to our lives and how we can’t go back in time and change everything. Taking drugs is like throwing a stone into a pond, it doesn't just affect you, it also affects others like friends etc. Drugs and alcohol never pick you, you pick drugs.

If you're still in your youth and you begin taking drugs there will be a ‘Greater Impact Rate’ or GIR. This means the drugs will have a bigger impact on your brain. ‘Faster Absorption Rate’ or FAR, means your brain will absorb the drugs faster. ‘Greater Addicted Rate’ or GAR, means you will become addicted to drugs easier.

We all only get one chance at life, so we should all make use of it and just be thankful and have gratitude. If we start using drugs now we will never reach our full potential.

Wordplosion

This week, our writing task is based around wordplosion. We have been trying to expand our vocabulary and also explain what "to succeed means" with out using the words "to succeed".
